Driving home from work yesterday by part time light came on so I stopped put the jeep in neutral put it in full time. Drove a couple hundred feet. Stopped put it in neutral and put it back in 2wd. No more light but when I try to take the slightest turn you can feel the front end binding. I have no vehicle for work now please help

You can put it in two-wheel drive and move in reverse a few hundred. It will work because of the way the whole shebang is designed.

Yup that did it. Had to hit the gas pretty hard from a stop but it is in 2wd now. Don't think i'll put it back in 4x4 unless it's a must. Don't wanna go through this crap again

Your shift linkage may be damaged or stuck. Shouldn't be too hard to take a look and see what's up. Its a pretty direct connection if I remember correctly.

the shift linkage looks fine and is moving freely. It sucks cause it was stuck in 4part time not full time

Well there is your problem you need to get rid of the 242 and put a 231 in.

The two things I would do first are here

1. Check/adjust linkage if needed, lubricate it while you're there.

2. Change the fluid in the transfercase.

Also as previously stated it may take a bit to pop out (or a reverse run), if the light is going off with the lever it's safe to say it is doing what it needs to, another tip for disengagement is if you're using the 4x4 in snowy road conditions (I have no idea where you're from) get at least one tire on some ice or hard pack snow (slippery condition) and it should allow the case to totally disengage faster.

Thanks. Ya I am scared to actually put it back in 4x4 and it not come out next time. What Transfer case fluid is most recommended?

My owners manual states dextron III (same for the auto trans), and doesn't specify between 242 and 231.

No matter what the reverse thing will always work so you shouldn't have any issues getting out even if it gives you another tizzy.
