So I was trolling youtube the other day and found this guy. I have been thinking about a hatch tire carrier for a long time. The only downside to me was the fact that the hatch would be freakishly heavy and I would have to carry a prop to keep it open. It turns out otherwise. What do you guys think ? I think the whole frame is way too big. All you really need is two pieces connecting the top and bottom of the hatch with a tire mount in the middle.

I think his bracket is that way for support. Alot could be cut out of it of course. With a fiberglass hatch though you'd need to spread the weight out. What's a spare 33 on a steelie weigh? 60lbs? Plus weight of the mount. I like the idea though.

I would lose sleep at night if that was on my rig.
Wouldn't whoops or washboard roads damage something? Hinge area is like 4 square inches, bolted to sheetmetal.

See I didnt even think about the hinges. I wonder if he reinforced them. I guess there has to be a reason its not done this way. However I dont know if they would rip out while the hatch is closed. Who knows. I wish I could get some feedback from the guy. Looks like he wheels pretty good too.Originally Posted by SteveMongr

Mainly because I don't feel.like signing up onto another forum. I might do more research if I actually decided to make something happen. I just wanted to post this here just in case others were wondering if this was ever done. I did Google and yahoo trying to find threads but nothing. If there was threads on this something would have shown up.Originally Posted by emptypockets

Cool thanks. I couldn't find anything on it. Just read the thread. Looks like he didn't modify the hinges in any way.Originally Posted by emptypockets

I also wanted to do this, but I have a fiberglass hatch. Wanted to stray away from the whole swing out bumper idea and got sick of the roof mounted spare.
Running out of ideas, maybe drag it behind me with some rope??

I was thinking about the hatch mounted idea as well but like you said, I'd be scared it would rip out. Is there a way to mount all the way through the hatch, or is that what he did?

you could use some long bolts and put them through the inside metal of the hatch, and probably make something like a nutstrip to run between the mounts to disperse the load. would probably hold a 33 just fine. Im kind of intrigued now..

There's a guy on Instagram, forgot hit name, but he used a YJ mount with a brace through the hatch to mount his 32 or 33" wheel.

Well that would be easy, but if you just take a mount to the hatch the tire would sit way too low. If I ever did this I would make the mount more towards the middle of the window to carry the spare higher. Also I dont know about doing just the mount. I had a YJ once and the mount ripped apart from a 33in tire hanging on it.Originally Posted by unidentifiedbomb

I don't know too much about it but it is covering most of the right side of his rear window.Originally Posted by helmut

Ditch the gas tank, perfect place for a spare tire (might need a skid plate). lol
