Two things come to mind:

1. How to make sure the wife never sees this story (I have a 96)
2. How to turn a new brawny rear bumper with tire carrier and rotopax mounts into a "safety first" discussion.

I'll start laying the ground work on #2 immediately.

They had a recall on the zj and wj for that problem,Their fix was a trailer hitch to give some protection. Its really nothing new the ford pinto use to be known for catching fire if its rear ended.Really any car rwd 80s and older had the gas tank in the rear like these jeeps and very few caught fire.

You know it's gonna be a bad day when you're in line at the drive-thru and there's a Pinto in front of you and an Audi 5000 behind you.

That is pretty good, especially the Audi part. Unfortunately I remember both of those situations. Or maybe it is not so bad - at least I can still remember them,

The Audi 5000 would just take off on its own kinda like the toyotas but a long time ago.You guys remember the 73-87 gm trucks they called death traps over the gas tanks on the outside of the frame rails. What i find strange everyone i knew that had a work truck as a kid had that body style truck and none of them ever caught on fire in a wreck.

There was more fib than truth behind the trucks. Same as our Jeeps.

They only caught fire if you ignited rocket engines after intentionally puncturing them
