Unibody is a unitized body with bolted on sub frames front and rear.

This a unit body welded to a full frame.

The Camaros (1st-4th gen, not sure about the new ones) are a unibody. Crawl under a Camaro, then under the XJ. You'll see the difference. The XJs are more rigid. When you jack up a front tire on a Camaro, the door won't open because the body is twisted too much. XJs have a bad rap for twisting up, but they are MUCH better than many unibody vehicles.

Yep. It was a revolutionary design that debuted in 1984. Also the first vehicle assembled using robotics in America.

I got to see all those cool videos working at the Jeep dealer.

the old VW bus was also a uniframe design, and predates the Cherokee by several decades.

IIRC, my 67 Charger was unibody with bolted on unit frame. I am quite sure I remember the 70s Dodges being unibody. Was a disappointment to me at the time. But you are right that it was an innovation in the SUV world. There has been lots of trashing the design over the years. Well copied now

My old e30 BMW's use to do that, you'd jack them up and the doors would get all funky. They also had subframes. Pretty cool design on the old jeep.

The old VW bus is not unibody. It is built on a platform chassis like the beetle and since the body can be removed from the platform frame it’s still considered a form of body on frame chassis design.

The XJ Cherokees and ALL Grand Cherokees are unibody. The ONLY "Body-on-Frame" Jeeps still made are the Wrangler and Gladiator. The last Cherokee to be "Body-on-Frame" was the SJ in 1983.
