expensive cherokee?
Hello All,
I am new to the forum. I have a 1996 2-door Cherokee 4WD 4.0 liter 6-cyl Cherokee, which someone told me was rare and worth $5k. Blue book is maybe $1800, and I will point out that they did not actually offer me that much money. Is there any truth to this?

No they are not as comin as a 4-dr but not that hard to find. If it is in really really good shape it may be worth the blue book but you may not get that much if you try to sell it.

Yeah that are kinda rare but it depends on where you live. I only see a handful of 2 doors for every 100 or so 4 doors. Some people say they are harder to come by in the south but I don't really know.
The condition and the mileage are the two big things that people look for not so much how many doors it has.

I live in central Maryland between DC and Baltimore. Funny, I have always wished I had a four-door. If it was worth anything extra wouldn't this be reflected in the blue book?

I'm pretty sure it is reflected in the blue book. I actually use NADA, but I had a 4 door and now I have a 2 door. They were exactly the same, mileage was even within a couple thousand. My 2 door in excellent condition books at $4900, the 4 door goes for $4100, if I remember correctly. I checked them both last fall.
In my experience, a 2 door is by far more rare than a 4 door. I looked for months before I came across a good one 2 door. Countless 4 doors, though.

Noticed one just this weekend, on I-84. Black, pretty beat-up. I wouldn't say they're common compared to the 4-doors, but I see 2-door models at least a couple of times a month here in the Tri-State area, including the 5 boroughs.
As far as worth. It comes down to rarity, and overall Cherks aren't a collectors model. They mass produced ~200,000 of them annually for over a decade, and tons of those are still running. Even options like 2/4 door aren't enough to affect the supply and demand.

Nah its not really that rare. 1996 was the year with the highest production of cherokees out of its entire production run (84-01).
Here's the list of rare XJs that will without a doubt be worth something in a few years.
1984-1985 Wagoneer Limited
1990-1992 Cherokee Briarwood
1986-1990 Wagoneer
1984-1986? Cherokee Cheif
1985?-1992 Cherokee Laredo
1986 Cherokee olympic edition
Upcountry Cherokee
Police package cherokee

I think it all comes down to getting a buyer that is looking specifically for a 2 door. If they're holding out for something specific, they'll probably shell out a few more bones for it.
