Do most 4.0s have an engine tap? My jeep is fine but ive bin looking around on craigslist and someone was selling a cherokee and the engine was taping an they said most 4.0s get that and its no problem

Yes. But there is a difference between a noisy motor and a bad motor. Sometimes if you don't know what your listening for, its easy to confuse them.

One person's interpretation of a sound as a "tap" could sound more like a knock to another. If you look at it make sure you listen to it and maybe see if you can track it down... If it is a leaking exhaust manifold or noisy injector that is less a problem than a noisy valve train or something worse...

As with all cars, some engines are noisy, some are not. If it's knocking, it's terminal, but sometimes it could be a noisy lifter, or in some cases, the injector pulses can be quite noisy. I know my 98 Sport has some loud f'n injectors, the ticking can almost make you crazy...lol

Check out the attached picture. I got this from my Haynes Repair Manual which covers Jeep Cherokee, Commanche, and Wagoneer Limited; all models 1984 through 2001.

I had a slant six that sounded like a diesel when it idled, for 150,000 miles. Had to put it to rest when the Duster's body rusted out at 310,000. I was always waiting for major failure though. My '98 XJ rattles in the back of the motor. It has been doing it for two years, I'm waiting.

Cool

I think I get some sort of valve noise at idle.....OPO says it's always done that (he's my brother). 250,000+ miles & runs 110%

sometimes the transmission makes a knock, pretty convincing as a rod knock but it quiets after 2000 rpm. mine has 220000 on it and still burns a little rubber all stock with the knock.
