So I'm in the market for a new muffler. The stock Cherokee is 2.25 center inlet and 2.25 offset outlet. Now for my questions. Any decent exhaust shop can convert it to work with a 2.5 inlet/outlet right? And secondly could I run center/center instead of center/offset?

Depending on the tailpipe you need the off set to line up the pipe between the leaf spring and the gas tank. A good muffler shop can build almost anything you want but be cautious. Throwing money into exhaust is mostly wasted on the 4.0 motor. It's designed for low end power and tends to sound like a lawnmower when you throw on a hot muffler.

 

2.25" is the ideal size for a 4.0. Only heavily boosted and/or strokers benefit from 2.5", and not always.
