But the left lever on my steering column (lever for turn signals) I pull that in towards the steering wheel or push to dash to either flick on the high beams or turn on the high beams. I hope this answers some questions and clears things up.
And yes, way before my time, there was a push button switch on the drivers floor board that the driver would step on to turn their high beams on. Throw that floor board switch in a car today and add in a clutch, and I think some of the stupid people today wouldn't know what to do.

Yea mostly people who know what they are talking about will know the difference and ask for car parts by their right name.
I was working one night and a lady asked for a headlight, her particular car had separate high and low beam bulbs, so I asked her which one she needed....she didn't even know the difference between them and then she said I need the outside bulbs. Confused, I asked her to show me, so we went out to her car, and she pointed to the outside bulbs, and I said those are the low beams, so she asked what the inside bulbs were and I said high beams, she said "oh, I thought all this time they were just back up bulbs for my headlights, no wonder people flash me when I drive in town. I guess I need 2 low beams and 1 high beam." Those people drove me nuts.

Yea its normally the older generation that had to deal with the switch on the floor, they call it a dimmer switch because that's how they grew up calling it.
