Yea, think of me as some sort of 40-something suburban geek who is never going to off-road. I wouldn't even know where to go. They don't have that around the NYC area. So, I am just a stock XJ'er who wants a reliable winter vehicle that I can also do some simple DIY on. There is 0% chance I mod this XJ. However, I am going to spend the money to make it "nice", in a stock way.

You know, I kind of hate to admit it, but I sort of like the Patriot. Aside from the fact that it looks Cherokee-ish, I mean... sure, it might be a car, but it has some clearance and as long as you don't expect to climb Everest with the thing, I think it's a perfectly serviceable machine.
Go for it. You're picking one of the most reliable vehicles with an unstoppable engine. It's a good buy. And if you ever do want to go offroading you can even do so with the XJ being stock.
