Default Custom XJ Toolbox?

This isn't fab yet ... but it's going to be. Just need to get some opinions/ideas first.

I currently have a sub in the back of my cherokee. Takes up way too much space and i don't jam out hard enough to require such a device.

Long story short i want to build a 3 drawer toolbox for back there. (or maybe two. I need to figure out how deep i want each drawer).

Dimensions that i want are 3 feet wide x 18 high x 22 deep. Should fit perfect in the back and take up most of the room.

The only thing i need to know is where would i get the tracks to put into the wooden frame that i'm going to build to hold the drawers in? (i want it to slid out basically like a toolbox in a garage. I want the sliders.) Not sure where to buy those.

I'm thinking i should build it out of wood as it's cheaper and i don't have any scrap metal laying around.

Any ideas/comments/opinions?

You can make your own tracks with a router. Otherwise home depot/menards/lowes should have some metal tracks that you can screw in.

I'm all about saving money and what have you.

Do you have any more information on how that's done? I have a router, but i doubt i have the bit required to do it.

Was going to buy 22" sliders from amazon for $15 each, but if i can go cheaper than that i'm going to do that.

Male and female T-slots. If you don't have the bits though I'd just buy the slides. $15 isn't bad. I probably wouldn't use wood for the slides.

Yeah i just asked my friend whos a carpenter about cutting slots into wood to use as a slide and he said i'd be better off buying the slides as the slots are a pain in the butt to cut and not as strong as the steel slides would be.

Are you saying i should build the drawers out of metal instead of wood? I was thinking a 2x4 frame for the drawer with a support in the middle and like 1/2" plywood as the bottom of the drawer.

It all depends on how much you plan on keeping in the drawers. Wood should be ok as long as you don't load it up with heavy stuff. I don't know what you all plan on putting in it so it'll be a judgement call on your part. Just make sure to get quality sliders that will hold up to the weight you plan on putting in the drawers and make sure they're properly braced in the box so they don't rip out when the drawer is extended.

Make it all of 1/2 or 3/4 plywood. No need for any kind of frame. It'll just add unnecessary weight, and take up valuable space. Don't cheap out on your slides either. You want heavy duty ones. Remember this is going in a vehicle and will be subject to vibrations and jostling around. Have your carpenter friend help you build the drawers. You'll want to dovetail them into the sides for additional strength.

I don't see any type of wood toolbox holding up for long at all. If you use plywood or MDF without sealing the heck out of it then it will be destroyed in a short time. Any oil, grease, water will just instantly ruin it. Aluminum would be your best bet and with a drill and some rivits you could make a very light and durable one in no time.

I went with a single back seat on passenger side. Its really for my dog or a smaller size passenger.. My brother is 6'4 about 240 so he doesn't really fit back there.. But for the other side. I'm in the process of building a aluminum diamond plate toolbox black to fit in the floor. It will be accessible from the driver side passenger door. With lock and Extra battery in it as well.. Also going to do another behind it where the spare tire sat. I don't have any pics yet but hopefully it will be done soon.

I've always wished I could afford to have built boxes for the rear side windows like work trucks. Might make for some neat offroad storage...

wood cabinets hold up just fine.. If you're worried about them getting wet, but some polyurethane on the finished product.

read this thread, it's full of awesome ideas.. I combined a bunch of different stuff from there in designing my rear setup. now I just gotta start the build. LOL
