Question Cost to build sliders?

I searched a bit and came up with nothing.

How much did it cost you to build your sliders? What type and thickness of material?

I did a little searching for steel prices and from the looks of it, I could buy sliders for the cost of making my own out of 2x6 with a tube step. Am I nuts?

Nobody? At least someone has built their own sliders, right?

making your own will certainly be cheaper. I'm planning out replacing my rockers with 2x6 rectangular steel. Do a search for 2x6 sliders and you'll have some reading to do!

Are you doing a 2x6 rocker replacement because your rockers are damaged/rusted or just for extra clearance and strength?

All of the above.

Here's the walkthrough that I'm basing mine off of, but I'm going to add some extra supports.

I'm just trying to figure out whether or not it's worth it to go through all that or just buy/build traditional sliders. My rockers are cherry at this point.

I'd say that if they're cherry, do all you can to protect them. Seal any and every hole you can leading to it. Do the traditional sliders. I hate that mine are shot--they are rusting from the inside out. I'm just glad that there's a really good solution to fix them and make it better. the 2x6 is a huuge project, especially for me, a guy who only welded in high school shop class (about 7 or 8 years ago). very minimal experience with body work in general. But, I'm ambitious. Picked up the welder today

Just keep practicing and it will all come back to you. Just be really careful welding the sheet metal body to the thick sliders, it's really easy to burn up the thin body panels.

Here in New Mexico, rust doesn't exist, unless it came in from out of state. I have parts of my 70' Dodge that have been in bare sheet metal in my garage for 6+ years, they're not even starting to surface rust.

I'm wondering if the little extra clearance is worth all the time input into a total rocker replacement.

Yeah, I'm fairly certain I'll pick it back up quickly. I have good plans to deal with the sheet metal and armed with an internetful of helpful information, although it can't be substituted for good practice.

I hate you.

I think that would depend on your determination, willingness to hack up your Jeep, and your wheeling style. There's no doubt that the 2x6 fix is a more popular mod up here in the northeast due to the rust issues we all have. I'm lucky that my 1990 Mazda 626 is somehow completely rust free!
