If you can't afford it or don't want to pay for one, that's fine. But you can't tell me a YJ is overpriced when you can resell it in ten years for the same amount or possibly more
I understand why they are expensive. They stay valuable for ever. For me it's just not logical to spend the cash when I might roll it down the mountainside someday.

The thing that gets me, is that Cherokees will not be cheap forever. I already see it in the Midwest. Cheap stuff is cheap for a reason. The average decent XJ is pushing the $4k mark now and it's not uncommon to see people asking $8k+ for nice ones. Cash for Clunkers took a huge chunk, rust, accidents, being wheeled to death took some more. XJs won't always be cheap and those premiums you see on Wranglers, will soon be in our neck of the woods.

If you're comparing same year models here's my experience offroading. We have both Cherokees and Wranglers in our group with similar mods. Drive-train will be very similar if not exactly the same. Not going to mention manual/auto trans since this is not a Jeep specific difference. Other small differences but here's the biggest IMO.

- Approach angles are much better on Wranglers and will see little to no body damage. Cherokees will get new dents if you look at them wrong.
- Cherokees have a slightly longer wheelbase, are more stable, less likely to tip and more capable on very steep climbs/descents.
