This is my first post on this forum and my first day. I am 16 years old, but very good with engines. Anyhow, my mothers car just pooped out and she let me decide what to get her next(she thought that was best). My friend had a 1990 cherokee Laredo sitting in his driveway for 3 years that I always liked. Went to go see what the jeep needed after sitting for 3 years. Changed oil,oil filter, and some other small things. I jumped it and it started right up.
all the tires were flat and I managed to find a set of 30in brand new mud claws and steelie wheels for just 300. Slapped them on and drove the thing around the block. No blow-by and didn't smoke. The entire underside was dry also. Never got hot and had great oil pressure. 190,000 miles also. The jeep has great interior for that many miles. Every thing works beside the ac blower(which I heard is a easy fix). Moms not too picky though. No major dents or rust beside a little hole under the passenger side trim on the quarter. I got the jeep home and started to fix the stuff that was needed. I have decided to wrap the entire thing with 3m 1080 gloss blue matalic vinyl wrap. And dont try to talk me out of it, I wrapped my fox body mustang and it turned out incredibly great. I've painted 3 vehicles and don't want to go that route. Love wrapping. Replaced all the fluids. I did replace the head gasket already due to the fact that it leaked a tiny bit. I can do everything myself and don't ever take anything I own to my local shop because they screwed my mom over a couple times. This is my second jeep that i worked on and it is very simple. I had to replace the header panel because of cracks. I bought a 91-96 panel though. I'll just have to get the head light besels and whatever else I need for the newer style clip as I go. Already took the bumpers and flares off and they are drying with Bedliner on them right now. I will post pictures as I go. I was wondering is anyone had any pointers or any thing I should watch out for also. This is my moms dd so it's not a trail rig. She doesn't even want it lifted. Thanks guys.
Dude, that's awesome. I'm sure you're mom will be happy. Your '90 XJ is a Renix (87-90) and there are some things specific to Renix Jeeps that should be taken care of along with the regular maintenance that's part of any Jeep. Fortunately, Cruiser54 has a good write-up on all of it. Refreshing the grounds should be number one on your list as they were sub-par from the start. Congrats on the new-to-you(r mom) Jeep. Here's a link to Cruiser's tips...
