I've got one that plugs into the power outlet and a magnetic antenna to stick on the roof. I plan on making it more permanent though.

Cobra 19 mounted on customer cup holder between the seats with a 102" whip mounted above the driver's side taillight.

I bought mine from Fry's Electronics but you can get a cb from truck stops or radio shack. With a hand held you're very limited to short range so id advise against it unless you want it as a back up or use on a farm or something.

I really would only be using it for talking with the guys on the trail with me, how limited is the range? Also should I get one that has the pa option?

I have found mine at garage sales, typically only pay $5 for them or they have been given to me by friends/family.

A hand held will probably get a couple miles depending on terrain. Would probably be alright in a small pack of vehicles on a trail. Just make sure you have a good place to secure it. Don't want it to go flying around the inside of the vehicle if something happens.

A cobra 19 would be perfect for use on trails or upgrade to a cobra 25 like mine which can be modified and tuned for optimum performance and has an external speaker and pa jacks

Just to make it clear for the original poster, the Cobra 19 can have external speaker and PA Jacks too.

It probably only reaches out no more than 2-4 miles which all depends on weather, terrain and antenna. External speakers can be bought from truck stops or anywhere they sell cb stuff. A pa speaker you can find in amazon I'm sure or check a truck stop.

I had my cobra 25 tuned a bit and I'm now getting out about 10 miles in the city.

With a 102" whip antenna I have gotten about 8 miles (country, mostly flat). I think the newer Cobra 19s will have the PA option, you will see a switch on the front that says CB / PA. All of the CBs I have ever had have had the external speaker jack.
