To carry a spare or not to carry a spare, that is the question

Couple ratchet straps and the stock ties down hooks in the cargo area should do it. I have all of my recovery gear in ammo cans. I have a MK 38 ammo can that fits my inflator and straps, along with the typical size cans for the chains and shackles. All of my gear, cooler, and suitcase (most good wheeling is at least 4 hours away) fit on top of my spare and beside it, all below the top of the backseat. I was planning to build a tire carrier, but I haven't gotten around to it because the spare in the back hasn't caused me any trouble. It's nice not having the obstruction hanging off the back of the jeep.

So I’m thinkin lay a spare down flat with a shelf. It doesn’t have to be a 33x12.5x15, it can be just a 33x15 and narrower stuck on an old OEM steel rim that I have, right. Even tho the backspacing is 5” or better as long as it’s narrow there should be no rubbing and I can throw it on to get me back home. What’s wrong with that thought?

As already said, if not in town, having a spare is piece of mind. It takes just one walkout, to wish and always have a spare tire with you! Benz.

My spare is an odd ball 33x12.5 I found on CL cheap. The wheel is a steel wheel I had laying around. I mounted the tire myself and didn't bother to have it balanced. It's a spare. Doesn't need to be perfect, just close. Diameter is the important part. I think you are going to find most tires of 33" diameter on CL are going to be 12.5" wide though. I wouldn't waste the money on a new tire of a narrower width to save that little bit of cargo space. If you need that space, you need a full size.

My wj's spare housing under the cargo floor contains the lpg tank (I know is bad but in my country is the only way to afford using a 4.0 inline six every day for commuting as I do) so I never carry a spare. Without the tank I would have the spare with me. Never had a pierced tire in the last 10 years (It will happen tonight) and I never go offroad except for some dusty backroads but as others said better safe than sorry.
