Never figured out the whole putting the spare on the roof thing, less mpgs, more wind noise, more top heavy in sharp turns and off camber situations, hard to get off if you actually need to use it, and the sun just bakes it up there.

Tire carriers are too expensive or time consuming (to build), you can just barely stuff a 31 in the spare tire holder in the back, and that's with modifying the seat bracket, and anything bigger you'll have to use your hatch space (again, with even more mods). Easy to toss it on the roof and forget about it for the mean time. I won't put a spare on mine, tried it and hated it. I'd rather save up for a carrier IMHO

I'd rather not have a spare than have one on the roof.
Also depends on the size of the tire you're putting up there. I put a stock tire up on mine years ago to make more room in the back, and had no noticeable issues. Stepped up SLIGHTLY to 30's and there is more weight, not lots more, but you can feel it. I can't imagine putting a tire bigger than that up there.
You have to think of a pendulum, the more weight up high, further from the center of balance, the more effect it will have.

stock size tire I would definitely leave in the stock location. No benefit really
