Breaking u joints on 31s
Hey guys,
A couple days ago I blew a u-joint wheeling which destroyed the ends of the axle shafts where the u-joint mounts. I'm running 31" tires and open diffs. I have read many times on this site that you can run 35s pretty comfortably on stock axles. I was wondering if the age of the u-joint had to do with the failure. It looked pretty old but the joint was tight. I'm wondering if anybody else has had this problem running small tires or if it was a fluke. Thanks.

tire speed or bouncing can easily pop one of the clips off and you can lose a cap
I can't stress enough, if you're going off road you need full circle snap rings
I watched a guy snap a ujoint open on 33's a couple weeks ago. lost the clip, lost the cap, then SNAP

good question. I don't remember what # they are. I just went in to reibes or NAPA and asked for a new 760x joint. then took the stock snap rings out of the bag and the guy brought me a box of snap rings. I just compared them with the stock ones till I found a match

Would it be better to just buy 760x ujoints instead of running stock joints and use the clips that come with them?

you need to buy a 760 ujoint anyway since you broke yours (stock replacement at napa). and the clips that come with that are just as bad as stock.

another good question would be how exactly did you break your ujoint. just roasting your tires off or what?

If you're breaking parts, don't just replace.....upgrade.

Well I was trying to yank my buddy out of some mud and pulled a little harder than normal, maybe 2500 or 3k rpms and POW.

well we told you how to fix it. get new ujoints and grind out some D30 shafts from the junk yard (95-01 models only). and install your new ujoints with full circle clips. problem solved
