Brand New Member, Help me with a project
Hello All,
I'm in North Carolina and I travel quite a bit for work, that's code for I'm not in a hurry. I saw this http://blog.caranddriver.com/jeep-ch...vibe-anywhere/ and if I could build something like that as a project car, I'd have exactly what I'm looking for. Can someone give help with the platform, year model and ideas on how to start?

Looks wise, you want a 73-84 Cherokee, that's a SJ.
Mechanical, the one you posted is a new JKU, that's a Wrangler Unlimited.
I'm guessing you want the looks. Two choices, try to find a clean unmolested example, they're still out there. And just give it a freshening up. Or find a project, and with a lot of fabricating and parts hunting you can have all new running gear.
Without knowing your budget and exactly what end-goal you're after its hard to say any more, except for welcome to the forum!

That is a one off prototype jeep made,But its made to look like the fsj aka full size jeep. They made pickups in that body style a 2 door called a cherokee and a 4 door called a wagoneer. The wagoneer will be easier to find because they made them from the 60s tell 91.Like said find one as rust free and stock as you can that will help you a lot in the long run.If you want to see the parts out there for them http://www.bjsoffroad.com/ or look around a forum for them http://www.ifsja.org/forums/vb/

Budget of about $20,000.00
My goal is a reliable daily driver. Something you don't see every day.
I really like the looks, but it doesn't have to be exactly that. It would be hard for me to justify much over $25k. Does that narrow it down at all?
I sincerely appreciate your reply!

Just a quick Craigslist search shows a few good lookers in my area in the $3-5k range, then there's this: http://losangeles.craigslist.org/wst...335507486.html not sure if that's a good price or not but it's interesting anyway.

The fsj didn't use a overdrive trans but a lot of them used a gm turbo 400 so you could swap in a 700r4/4l60e or maybe a 4l80e,What t case depends the years the 79 older used a passenger side drop while the 80-91 used a driver side drop.Engine choices are unlimited since it has a frame you can get swap kits for a gm small block or ls,Or with work a diesel swap if you want that.
