I made a self-bleeder with a check valve in the lid of a jar. The bleed hose goes into the check valve, then passes into the jar. A breather hole in the lid lets air out of the jar as fluid and air come in. When you push the pedal down, the line pressure pushes fluid / air down (and forces air out of the jar through the bleeder), but when you release the pedal the check valve prevents reverse flow so the line fluid has to be resupplied from the master cylinder reservoir. This prevents air bubbles from moving back and forth in the line. Everything else I've seen, air bubbles stay in the line.

Don't have a recent one. Here's a pic of an early version where the check valve on the breather side. Pretty sure I moved it to the inlet side at some point.

I bought the check valve from McMaster-Carr, have bought a few of them for various things, handy to have

I need to rebuild it with copper washers, since the o-rings have rotted out now.

If there is air, I have a helper press the pedal. Otherwise I just do a gravity bleed 1 wheel at a time.

Actually I left it like that so that fluid would be able to move out of the tube. With the check valve on the inlet, fluid would stop and sit there, couldn't go in without pressure, couldn't come out due to vacuum
