Anyone here ever toss a AW4 into a XJ that has no provisions in the wiring for it?

Ok I had little time to give out more details, I have a 97 auto I wanna toss in my weekend wagon.
I really don't know everything about this transmission other than it has electric solenoids to shift.
Can I get by with out that and just manually shift since my 88 XJ does not have the wiring for it?
Or will I have to modify the valve body?
Crawling with a stick sucks and I wanna change it.
When I do this swap I already know what needs to be added, external cooler with a mini fan and steel lines, no hoses. I gotta buy a flex plate. All that good stuff.

Anyone here ever switch a standard XJ to Auto?

Trade your jeep for an automatic. Wish I had one to offer, I love 5 speeds and would gladly take another one. But my 97 is a 5 speed and not going anywhere

That's the thing. I've done to much work to it to get rid of it.

buy a cheap automatic then, swap everything over, and then sell it.

Dukie gave me a nice write up on how to wire the solenoids to switches.
I got this now.

That was suggested by ktmracer. It sounds nice! But I'm on a budget right now and all these parts I have are free.

if i was dead set on awapping an aw4 into a originally 5 speed equipped rig, i would simply do this:

yes, its $200. But its super easy to wire in, no crossover parts needed, can keep your existing computer and wiring and such too.

he makes a more basic shifter for considerably less, but i like the bling.
