Default AW4 Trans swap

Does anyone know if 97 AW4 auto trans would work on a 94 AW4 4.0L XJ? The auto trans is slipping on my 94 xj so I went to the junk yard and the only one i found was a 97 AW4.

no it will not

different computers are needed and even if you get the matching computer you have to tear into your wiring harness, and it might trigger a cel

I was gonna say whole different thing to put and 89 in a an older model then it is to put a newer one in an older model..I am with KTM here that 94 needs a 95 or older tranny to swap in. To bad he's not clsoer I have a good AW4 out of a 91 sitting in the garage collecting dust.

87-90 aw4's are compatible
91 to 96 are the same as the 87-90's except for having a 23 spline output
97-98's are compatible, not sure what they changed here all i know is they wont swap into other years.
in 99 they added a rear speed sensor which required a new computer system to run

Hey, did you check-clean-change the fluid screen of your tranny before swapping it?

Sorry to bring up a old thread but why make a new one. I'm trying to put a 95 trans into a 97 xj I know it will bolt up and work but i know that I have to splice the wires for it to work. Are these wires color coded or does anyone know what wire goes where.
