Default Any idea what it is worth?

I have a chance to buy an 87 YJ Wrangler. The body is in good shape and was well taken care of. It has some nice upgrades, though I don't know specifically what gear was used for the upgrades. It has a Chevy V8 with low miles, a 5" lift, 33" tires, a top end alarm system. I'm not sure if they changed out the transmission and/or transfer case when they put the engine in. It's sat in my uncles driveway for 5 years now because it was his baby and he had a stroke. When they approached me about buying it a couple years ago they were asking ridiculous numbers, like 15k. Now I've approached them and they're more thinking along blue book. KBB doesn't list before '93 online, and NADA had an estimate of 6k for a stock 6 cylinder in showroom condition. with the paint faded and all the options, I don't know what I should offer for this beast. Any ideas?

and it's good to be back.

let them set the price and go from there, you may offer more than they were thinking

If they swapped the original engine for a chevy they had to change the t-case and tranny as well. I would say $5-$8k. I paid $4500 for a 92 yj 2.5 68k original miles clean body 4 inch lift on street tires but minimal armor and upgrades. Stock bumpers. Ask them for a number something they would like to get then negotiate from there.

My 87 came with a BA-10 tranny which won't bolt to a SBC so the tranny was swapped and depending on what tranny they used who knows what t-case. I'm hoping the axles got swapped because the stock ones were barely strong enough for the 4.2 that came in it.

so it's in my driveway. I'm currently test driving it over the weekend. The rear axle was replaced according to my cousin. He wasn't aware of any change to the transmission or transfer case and I was able to confirm the transfer case is a np231. I'm going to study how to figure out what transmission it is. I don't think it's an AX-15, just didn't look familiar to what I had in the 93 cherokee. But it's been awhile. I would not be stoked to find that the clutch slave cylinder is in the bell housing, I did that twice on the 93 and it was awesome learning the first time, a friggin nightmare the second time.

I'm going to take it down for emissions tomorrow. Things I want to try to identify is:

- the engine model and year, all I know is a carborated chevy 350
- the model of the rear and front axles.
- the transmission model.

Any tips would be appreciated. By the way the odometer reads about 89,000. I'll try to get some pics up.

Post up some pics of the tranny and axles. I'm sure we can help you out.

the value is subjective, and depends on a few factors, whether he (or you) need or want to buy-sell

if he needs to get rid of them, I would not offer over $1000, as you usually cant reduce an offer once made, and you would have transport costs

if you have space to keep them, that would be an ok price for 2 non-runners, although less would be better

Interestingly, guy I know, an Afghan fellow, buys wrecked Jeep XJ, for the engines and D35, (probably trans and TX as well) which are exported to Dubai,
the rest goes to scrap steel yard, claims he gets ~$1000..he let me rat some parts for free

Its actually pretty amazing a few things I have seen, another guy exported wrecked Toyota Landcruiser/parts to Nigeria..from Australia
