The cobra 29 is a very sturdy little radio, it can take quite a beating without breaking and dose very well to small mods. Remember! Your antenna makes your radio and you can't ever get enough grounding, don't skimp on components if you want things to last and work properly.
The small cobra dx' series are good for car to car in convoy/trail but they are pretty much useless and don't sound that good even with the mod. limiter cut and a good power mic and don't like vibrations and being jar'd around. (boards like to crack.)
Spend the extra 20-30 bucks and get a better radio, or hit swapmeets/flemarkets and find one. Also "IMHO" firestick antennas are garbage, there cheap for a reason. Cobra will not warentee a radio if they learn its connected to a firestick. They break way to easily and on the stupidest crap too. I use broken firesticks for am/fm antennas. That's about all there good for. Wilson silverloads are one of the best stick antennas I've run and have never had any problems with it, not like the pile of firesticks I have that are all shot.
If you want a good setup don't be a cheapa$$ or you will regret it on the long run.

I'm pretty green to all the brand names to staw away from but I've learned a lot by researching and talking with my cb tech. There is so much to know and learn about this hobby so I'm pretty open to what ever positive input is thrown my way.

Now with that aside, there good radios, I've owned 2, the only thing is parts are a little hard to come by. And can get a little pricy when trying to find one, because they are very saught after. IMHO if you looking for a good entry level ssb CB that's not gonna be too expencive, a cobra 148gtl or a uniden grant XL (same radio diferent names) would be a good choice. Parts are everyware and there strong radios and sound really good with just a tune with the stock mic. I run a 148 in my rig with a gunnypuck tactical sr71 mount and a peditor 10k.. I swap antennas when I go out wheeling.

Great info! I've been thinking about getting a side band for full time use and have been toying with the idea of getting a ham license too. I think I'll stick with cobra on this one

I recently switched to a different setup... 102" stainless steel whip... I can talk well over 40 miles with local people on my new radio (Galaxy DX 959, with homemade Dual final conversion, and from time to time I run the HR2510)
and I have talked all over the USA on this setup

I think I need to do an RF gain upgrade on my 25 cuz it doesn't seem like I'm receiving even half as well as I'm getting out. There is a cb shop near me that will turn the illumination **** into an rf gain, obviously adding the components inside also. The radio isn't old and I don't want to invest in to another radio until this one craps out.
What do you guys think?

I really like them, there nice radios but I have hardly seen any on trails so I can't say how sturdy they are.
The newer uniden series are out and ill be getting the 680 and the 880 and depending on the need I can do a few write ups on the radios here for people.

Consider a Galaxy DX 959, 5 digital frequency counter, mosfet finals ($25 dollar kit upgrades it to DUAL final and doubles the power), Upper and lower side band, AM, talkback, adjustable power...
Galaxy 949, same as the 959 but NO frequency counter
other options to look at are ANY export radio
the Cobra 29 LX is limited to AM only transmission... keep that in mind
