Only cost me $35 to get tuned to 27 watts. Sooner or later I'll be pushing 10x that.....shhhh...

For another $50 or so I'll get an RF gain custom installed in my cobra 25

Thats pretty good. I tuned my own antenna cuz I bought an SWR meter. Mine was set at 27 cuz thats where I got best outgoing signal with low static/interference.

Wouldn't it have to do with the radio transmitting over the 15 miles? You can turn up the gain on the receiving radio but too high will just pick up static.

No, the distance your radio transmits isn't the same as what it receives. To get any kind of spectacular range the cb needs to be internally modified, have a good antenna with excellent ground plane. These things just aren't plug-n-play. A lot of factors will determine how well a cb operates.

For example, if your antenna isn't properly tuned to the cb and you have a high SWR you can and will fry the radio eventually if you transmit out.

I've spent many many hours reading information and talking with cb technicians and its paid off. I now have a perfectly performing cb and antenna with no issues, no engine noise, and almost no static (yes a little static is to be expected no matter what)
