I've been out of the Jeep world since '89. I had a CJ-5 and used it for exploring the mountains around Denver, my home, and Big Game Hunting. I'm looking to get back into Mountain Exploring with my teenage grandsons. I'm retired so price is an issue. I've been looking around Craigs List and have found several mid 90's Cherokee Sports in my price range (around $2500). I'm not into rock hopping or anything like that, just exploring old mining and logging roads. I'm in my 60's so I like some comfort, not Cadillac comfort, but better than a CJ.
Is a Cherokee Sport a good choice for me? If it is what should I look out for while shopping? Anything I should look for?
Thanks

You can find nice 93-98 Grand Cherokees in your price range too. They do very well off road and have more room and comfort. Most Grand Cherokees are adult owned and do not suffer from a lot of trail damage, hell, most have never been off road anyway.

yes it would be... any cherokee is a good cherokee... but this is my opinion. Hope it helps.
there's a green GC on the corner of evans/colorado(?) for sale, I think 1500. thats all I know about it, pass it on my way to school every day it's an option I suppose lol a lil less than 2500, so it gives ya 1k for upgrades... or repairs if needed lol
I put the gc seats in mine, mixed feelings lol they are waaaaay more comfortable than the xj seats, but the xj seats hold your body a little more solid yaknow? I chopped my xj drivers seat and put it in the rear, so there aint no goin back for me lol not sure that I'd want to haha

Thanks for the replies. I think I'm going for the best vehicle for the price. I think I would be happy with either a Sport or Grand Cherokee. What should I worry about and what should I look for?

Look for rust in the floors, overheating issues on some XJ's, electrical gremlins in either an XJ or ZJ, and trans slipping issues in some ZJ's. The V8 ZJ's w/the D44A rear axle have a problem with pinion bearings sometimes.

My biggest recomendation would be to stay away from the renix era Xj's , not that there is anything inherantly wrong with them you just have to learn a whole new way of working on them.
