Default 97 with 98 trans trouble

I bought my first xj(97)for pretty cheap. Knew it was leaking transmission fluid when i had bought it, looked like was just coming from the tranny pan. Drove it a few days, then decided to crawl under it and find out where it was exactly coming from. Ended up being the bell housing was cracked, and the guy i had got it from tried jb welding it. Found a 98 aw4 at a pick and pull, had no idea there were any differences at the time. Long story short can only shift manually. have the 98 tcu, doesnt shift. I have it wired so i can control the torque converter lockup. Swapped out silonoids, no change. checked tps, brake switch. Thing has been a nightmare. swapped plenty of chevy transmissions before with no problem.

I also swapped the speed sensor(ouput). but the 98 has a input which is not hooked up. Fluid is full. nss had to be cleaned up. Just not sure what else it could be. Had to fix a few wires on wiring harness.
