She mentions "aftermarket" work in post #1. He could have done a lift kit, seat covers, new rims and tires, roof rack, light kit, $1000 stereo system, whatever. We don't have his story.
Yes, it's a ton of money and doesn't make sense, but I've seen people spend way more than that on accessories on trying to pimp out their vehicle.

I havent pimped it with a bunch of bs. In fact if the motor hadnt gone out the money spent there wouldve gone toward soem lockers or axle upgrades. Bought in May 2010 for $3900. Had 160,000 miles. It was already lifted about 4", had one set of BFG mudterrains, another set of Maxxis Bighorns with 2 having a good 75% left and the other two nothing. Inside there was a sound system worth maybe 300 at best.
Soon after purchase I had steering issues cleared up (it was really loose) needed new tie rod ends, balljoints, and trackbar. Parts and labor for that were about 600. Couple months later the head cracked along with significant rod knock in cylinder 5 and 6. So I pulled it out with some more experienced friends and sent it to Oregon Engine Rebuilders a reputable shop not to far from home. They replaced the head and rebuilt the motor for $1500. Other expenses were: fluids, waterpump, thermostat, fuel filter, hoses, belt, battery, sp wires, spark plugs, distributor cap and rotor, misc bolts that went missing, new sending units, gauge panel from xj with tach oil press, water temp; airaid air intake, flowmaster 44 and labor to install. I was trying to get the motor as solid and lasting as I could. The 2500 figure should make sense when looking at the parts now.
Basically right now cylinder 6 piston has a slighter smaller than a dime hole through it. Hopefully, all I will need is a new piston. I drove it smoothly for about a hundred miles until it cut out. Oil was inside the intake manifold and it was backfiring bad. Taking it to a mechanic with a OBD-II led us to find the hole. The compression was way lower in 6, and the computer was reading a super rich mixture. The spark plug for6 was burnt up and according to friends it was loose and is what resulted in it running rich as it was sucking air through the spark plug hole.
Therefore it really isnt on warranty if a spark plug wasnt tightened properly. Im just waiting for the time and someone to repair it.
