Default 8.8 ford guys help?

found a axle from a friend, free. Its a 8.8..but its from a crown vic.96 disk brakes complete 58.5 wms to wms. think is a 27 spline axles. i know everyone goes for the exploder rears cause the ease of use and 31 spline axles. has anyone used of of these??

i know people who have used em, pretty sure they are same width but i believe they are 28[not 27] spline instead of 31. Now if you could find a 9" from the back end of a crown vic or a merc then i would say deffinately go for it.

Yea the 28spline will be weaker than the 31 spline. Its also probably a 3.73 ratio as that was very common on the vickys. Overall it will still be better than the turdy 5. I think its worth swapping if the axle is free. Only prob you might run into is the gear ratio.

Don't bother messing with it.

An 8.8 out of an Explorer makes more sense. A very change in leaf spring perches and shock mounts is all that's needed. Compare that to the axle you posted....OMG!

Sometimes a "Great deal on a _______!!" really means "Look at what I get to waste a lot of time and money on unnecessarily!"

yea after seeing pics of the axle thats gunna be a lot of work tearing all that old crap off, as for how deep can you go on the carrier i assume you mean what range of gears can you run with the carrier, if so the 8.8 does not have a carrier break so you can run what ever gears ya want, there is however a difference between the LSD and open carriers.
