LSx 5.3 vs us
Which is more reliable ? My friend with 5.3 Silverado says his engine will last more than twice as long as my jeep's. Is his more reliable but ours easier to work on or which is more reliable long term ? Transmssion isn't even a debate AW4>glass jawed 4L60E all day.

Those 5.3s are one of the better engines GM has made recently. But twice the longevity of a 4.0L is very doubtful. Unless the 4.0 is always thrashed and never maintained while the 5.3 is babied with oil changes every 3k.

Both maintained equally the 4.0 will last longer but I wouldnt be so quick to put down the 4L60E trans my man. There are plenty of 9-10 second drag cars beating the hell out of mildly built versions of those.

I'm a tech and out of the 5.3s and the 4.0s that I see every week the 4.0 will out last a 5.3 any day but I do agree about the gm trans. They are built strong and last

In my experience the GM trans are junk. My brother's 4L60e in his s10 blazer has been rebuilt twice, my dad's 4l80e has been rebuilt once in 135,000 miles, and my friend's dad's yukon has gone through 4 or 5 4l80e's in 175k.

They can be hit and miss. Also depends in how they are maintained as far as filter changes and fluid flushes and driving style. Tell ya what though the transmissions in the libertys seem to be junk, I've seen 9 libertys in the past year come to our shop for transmissions

And alsot putting close to 1000ftlbs of tq to the ground on some cars. I got several buddies with turbo lsx's and the got the 4l60 and 80's. frigging cars get beat on all day long doesnt miss a beat. I beleiv ethe 4.0 will last longer, but im not sure if they were both beaten if the 4.0 could hang with either of the ls1's the 4.8 or 5.3.

4l60e is a pile of ****.
4l80 is badass. If you break one your doing something wrong. Basically a th400 with OD.
BUT, I cant see why a 4l60e wont last in a cherokee. What kills them are slow shifts and going wide open into third gear. I doubt hardly anyone on here is going to be running past 2nd wide open, thats 70-80 mph depending on gear/tire.
Ive seen plenty of extremely high mileage 5.3s, you cant beat a good 4.0, but then again, they dont make anywhere near 300+hp. I'm a little biased towards ls motors though
