I personally have wheeled both an auto and a manual.
A manual transmission is strong and durable. You don't have to worry about the transmission heating. You can select the gears and shift when you want too.
I thought the manual was the way to go until I got my XJ.
With an automatic, there is no need to think about shifting. The transmission will hold itself and prevent wear and tear on your knee.

on the road i like 5spd, but there are some trails that will roast the clutch if you're not careful.
manual is less complicated and more durable, but on some trails, auto has made it a whole lot easier for me to get through without damage.

The AX-15's a tough simple transmission, but it can be a bit heavy and mechanical.. not a bad thing.. but it can give you quite a workout if your jeeps bouncing around, and your trying to hold onto the steering wheel, dip the clutch, stay on the gas and find the right gear.. but sometimes that just makes it more fun!.
In traffic I love the AW4.. lazy driving, nice to be able to just sit back and chill..tap the accelerator, tap the brake..
The ax-15 is a much more involved drive.. dipping the clutch, holding the clutch, shifting the big heavy box...constantly thinking what gear am i in, what gear will I need next.. but then it pays you back in fuel economy..
I have them both, and I love em both... most of the time
Have both currently and I prefer the auto over the manual for what I do with mine.
The stick is fun to drive on the street, but after a day in the woods with it, it becomes a chore.

That's what 4lo is for haha. I also have both (well, I will in about 7 or 8 hours I will). Manuals are also very nice to have when you're going down hills (I know you can downshift on an auto but it's already there in a manual).
