Buy the old clunker and swap the front axle, transmission/transfercase, t-case linkage, and drive shafts over to your 2wd.

Question: Do you need to change tranny when converting a Cherokee from 2wd to 4wd?
And if so, why?

Yes because a t-case doesn't have anything to bolt onto on a 2wd tranny. Unless you have a 4wd parts vehicle sitting around you'll come out cheaper buying a 4wd.

I'm actually in the process of converting mine to 4wd. Not that expensive for parts, the hardest part is going to be swapping transmission, other than that easy peasy.

Transmission must be from 98 to 01 so its bolt-in ! Im also looking at converting mine, just waiting for the parts to appear at the right price

Of all vehicles the Cherokee is probably one of the easiest to convert from 2wd to 4wd.

pretty much any unibody is. Otherwise 99% of the time youre looking at frame swaps in addition to everything else.
