3/4 elliptical set up?

Ive been doing some reading, and I came across pictures of a 3/4 elliptical set up on a CJ. It seems interesting, anybody ever heard of this? All input appreciated.

Tend to be really bouncy and hit hard when they bottom out. IIRC they used to call these buggy springs after horse and buggys not rock buggies.
