Hmmm I can't seem to find the "4x4" logo anywhere... But seriously, why can't they make something cool like the Toyota fj even though it didn't last. Something offroad capable but cheap without all the electronic crap. Jeep is trying to make range rovers and I dont like it.

As an XJ owner, it pains me to say this, but stock for stock a Patriot with the trail rated package will outperform an XJ off road, get better gas mileage, and be more comfortable to ride in... It's modern technology... Remember, while the Wrangler has always been an "enthusiast" vehicle, the XJ was not sold with that in mind... It WAS the original soccer mom mobile!!!!
Oh, and I'll just leave this video here:

I wonder how much it would cost to buy a new from the factory Original Cherokee. Say if they brought out all of the old tooling and started production again. Same everything, just "new".
Would you buy one for $20-$25k?
Wonder if Jeep has any in a warehouse somewhere??? I know you can still buy a crate Honda Odyssey for about $10k brand spank-me new still.

let's start with the easy stuff:
1: Emissions/engine- To bring the 4.0 up to current emissions standards would not be cost effective. Add the fact that no other vehicle has used the 4.0 for years, and you have no way to spread the costs across a broader spectrum. The Penstastar takes up less space, makes much more power, and is MUCH more efficient.
2: Transmission- While the AW4 was an awesome transmission, compared to modern stuff it's a dinosaur.
3: Crash standards- This is a big one. First lets start with the engine. With the length of the 4.0, there just isn't enough room for a suitable crumple zone. Add to that the government standards requiring more and more protection, new rollover standards, etc., and the old chassis is just a no-go.
4: Electronics- You would have to add traction/stability control, ABS, and Tire Pressure Monitors at a minimum. This is all mandated by the government now. Add in all the other conveniences that people expect now, and it would mean a complete revamp of the interior as well.
5: suspension- while the front suspension would be fine for a "modern" XJ, there is no way the rear leaf springs would make it onto a new XJ. Why? start with ride comfort, and more cost effectiveness. It would make more sense to convert to a coil sprung rear setup like a wrangler, or even like the WK. Add to that how difficult it would be to get that leaf spring rear to play nice with a modern traction control setup, and you wouldn't have a choice. This of course just adds more cost to the equation.
And this list is just to start....

So... take a Patriot, throw in some square head lights and a more utilitarian interior, and there you go - modern XJ.
...or, as close as we'll ever get to one.
