Oh and has anyone seen the recent concepts? I know they are just concepts but it looks like they are pretty sweet. And they are built for offroad.

 

Wasn't knocking you for living at home. I was just pointing out that you haven't even come close to experiencing the burdens of living on your own or all the bills that come with it.

Cash for clunkers put a lot of new cars on the road. Low interest rates are driving up sales too. It also seems that a growing majority of people always need to have the latest and greatest thing even if they can't afford it. Nice car, crappy house/apartment is a growing trend that I've been seeing. Another one is a brand new car while on food stamps/section 8 housing. It's easy to make payments on cars while the government is taking care of the rest of the responsibilities.

 

actually, you'd be surprised how many people trade in their newer car for a new car. i work at a chrysler/dodge/ram/jeep/fiat dealer, most of our used car stock is probably 2010 model year or newer. we get people trading up all the time. i dunno, maybe its a demographics thing. i know i wouldnt trade in a newer vehicle for a new vehicle, but i guess a lot of people have that mentality of wanting a new car. people also see owning a new car and not having to do work/maintenance is better than maintaining one car for 10 years or whatever.

all im saying is that i think you underestimate the mentality of the majority of new car buyers


also, i think people need to just wait for the new cherokee to actually come out and give it a chance. personally, i think its gonna be very similar to the patriot and compass since its a FWD platform, but we'll see. i'm actually wondering when they'll start showing up at our dealer. we're already getting 2014 grand cherokees....

 

Understandable. I have no clue how it would be on my own lol. And yeah. I haven't seen it much like that, here people seem to do okay. But I see some nice cars at the trailer park lol

Around here you can get a trailer for like $6000 and rent is like $100 a month for the land. It's easy to make a car payment when your rent is $100 a month lol.

Maintenance is a big reason for trade in though. More and more cars are becoming 'dealership only' for repairs/maintenance and that gets awfully expensive. Gone are the days of a wide open engine bay. Now everything is crammed in so tight with plastic decoration to fill in the rest of the space lol.

 

Lol imma get a trailer. And save all my money for the XJ. Haha jk I can't stand hillbillies. There's a difference between country people and straight up rednecks. It's straight up rednecks here. I went throughg the drive thru at McDonald's and got stuck behind some lifted beat up ford. Once he saw my jeep, he thought he would mash on it. In the drive thru lane. Lol I can't say anything I did the same thing back.. Anyways can someone tell me why independent suspension is bad offroad? I get solid axles will always have contact with the ground but won't independent still flex? When people talk about the new Cherokee they always include "it's got independent suspension". Just don't see why it'd be that bad. Less power? I like the FWD part. Fwd is very good in snow and mud.

OK, so your probably aware that independent suspension allows each wheel to move freely, unrestricted by the opposite wheel. This gives it a much smoother ride on-road which is why it is used in passenger cars, vans, and most cross-overs. It would work fine on light, level trails; but sucks when you get to places where you need articulation. With a solid axle, when one wheel goes up, the other goes down and this helps maintain contact with the ground. Contact with ground = traction. With independent suspension, if one wheel goes up, the opposite wheel isn't obligated to go down unless the whole vehicle leans in that direction. From my experience it's like driving with the sway bar hooked up in the front. The Grand Cherokee's front right wheel goes up on a rock, the body leans to the left, the rear right wheel goes up, bang; no traction in the rear.

I would be more than happy to elaborate further if need be.

I will agree that having the option of front wheel drive is a plus (except for those of us who like to drift).

 

I.S. is terrible. That's why all the military humvees are solid axle. Only civilian humvees are IS. Also, thats why there has never been any vehicle in baja races with IS.

Also. the Ford Raptor is going to solid axles next year because IS is so awful
