Default 2000 Cherokee Xj compared to other years

I may be getting a new XJ today. The link to the CL post is below. I am curious how the community likes the 2000 year compared to others. I see a lot more '98 and '93's out there. Not as many 2000. Still has the inline 6 which is kinda what I want. It has 171,623 miles and is an automatic.

I know stick is better but its mostly a daily driver with maybe some light offroad fun. Nothing serious. I cant afford to break stuff much. Heh. I wish I could anyways. Checking the VIN on jeeps site for recalls, It still has this recall that needs to be done:

INTAKE MANIFOLD DEBRIS SHIELD

Which should not change the performance of the engine. Just apparently, will help with the possibility of an under hood fire from debris.

I may also get a Honda Pilot off a friend. But, it's not a Jeep. So i don't know.

What do you guys think? I would rather have the jeep. But is this a good year compared to others?

Looks like a good xj. Only problem with 00-01 is if you overheat it you'll crack the head

Yea that wont be a cheap fix. Whats the best way to keep the overheating mitigated? I never really had overheating issues in any of my older cars. Make sure the radiator and lines are good and to use coolant?

It wouldn't be too bad, just keep up with maintenance and don't let it get too hot

With those miles it may have already have been replaced. I've heard of a lot that crack at 90,000 miles and others that don't ever crack, just depends on how it's been maintained. Make sure to check the color of the oil, if it looks like chocolate milk it means there is coolant in it.

Yay someone close-ish to me

Look at the carfax first to be sure if the head is new or not....some of the 0331 heads crack, some don't. but that's why I bought my 89 instead of the 2000 I was looking at down by a car lot near me. didn't wanna take a chance.

That being said, if you get this one, the head could be fine for a long while if you maintain it good

My 01 never cracked with 165k brother in laws had 210k never cracked and it was a 2000. Check under the cap for milky oil.
If it cracks later on replace the head right away to avoid damage. I did mine in a day and cost $600 with a Clearwater head. I replaced it just for piece of mind.
I wouldn't let it scare you away. IMO

I have a 2001 and so far I don't have any problems with over heating. I only have 134,500 on it though. I'm not worried about it overheating, since I just did a complete radiator flush and filled it with new coolant. The previous owner was my brother in law and it the coolant looked like he never changed it, but even with the old coolant I never had over heating issues.
