Default 1986 ford 9"

I have a buddy that says that he's got a 9" sitting around from a 1986 f-150. I've been trying to do some research on it but haven't found much for that year. Are they big/small bearing? 28 or 31 spline? Anything that might keep me from getting it?

It's gonna be better than a D35 no matter what it is.

honestly, i wouldnt worry bout any of that cuz you can swap everything the way you want and even make it up to 40 spline full floater if you want

I'm 95% sure that diff is a 8.8 not a 9". They supposedly stopped using those in trucks in 79-80. Not a bad diff but totally different from a 9"

Correct it's going to be an 8.8 and it's full width. So you'd need a matching front axle to go with it and it's not considered that great of an axle.

Actually depending on the engine thats in the truck it will be a 9" 85-86 was the last years for 9" in the trucks. 86 it really depends on the engine

They're 31 spline. The 9" was standard in Broncos and F150's up to '82 I believe when the 8.8 came out and after that it was still available as an option. My '81 F150 and '85 Bronco both have the 9" and my '84 F150 has an 8.8 in it.

It will be replacing a 29 spline 8.25 eventually. Not sure where you got d35?

I read that they were available up to 86. I guess i'll just have to go check it out to see if it really is a 9".
