I'm thinking you have a Liberty as it's known to us here on this side of the pond.

any running issues (cutting out, stalling, coughing, etc). Check engine light is on steady? or flashing? What code(s) is it giving you when hooked up to diagnostics?
Sounds like it's in limp mode to prevent engine damage

research says it may be an issue with the electronic throttle control.
Make sure nothing is holding the pedal (like a floor mat).
Then try resetting it. Here's the steps you need to follow:
1. Find an unused section of road with a good spot to pull-off/turn-around.
2. Pull off of the road and shut your car off.
3. Turn your key to the "On" position (but don't start the car), and wait for the 'idiot' lights to go out.
4. Press down on the accelerator, and let it back up.
5. Turn your car off.
6. Re-start your car and cruise up and down the road testing your throttle responsiveness.
Depending on how fast/slow you do the 4th step, your throttle will either become more or less sensitive/responsive.

Respond with the check engine code(s)
Here is how to retrieve them without a scan tool (have a pen ready)
Starting with the ignition key in the off position, cycle the key through 'Acc' to 'On' and back off without starting the engine (quickly - before dash lights display and 'ding' is heard) three times.
Off-On-Off-On-Off-On. All stored codes will read out in the odometer display.
