I think he is saying pause a little at the sides and then move a little more quickly across the gap of the bevel.

Try a 3/16 landing and root opening. 110 amps or so. Don't whip much at all like a 1/32 to a 1/16, watch the molten puddle from the top fuse to the back edge as you go. Takes time to get it down.
