Hoping some on here have some experience with FCAW. I have a cheapo 90 amp flux welder. I've heard from several sources that a better wire can make quite a difference with it.

Please don't make suggestions like "get a better welder" or "go get a MIG". Obviously if I could do that, I'd have done it by now.

Can anyone point me in the right direction on good brands of flux-core wire? I've heard good things about Lincoln Electric wire. I've heard the Hobart wire is "okay". I heard INE is a good wire made in Italy, but then someone said that Chicago Electric (harbor freight) branded wire is made by INE so I have my doubts.

Maybe I'm in the wrong thread with this question, but even you hardcore welders weren't awesome on the first arc.

I tried Lincoln wire first, then tried Hobart. I prefer the Hobart, personally.

I was looking at buying my first welder and was wondering if anyone here had any experience with the longevity migweld 140? How well does it preform on thicker metals, like 1/4"? Have you had any problems with it feeding? I'm able to pick one up for $375 new and wondered if you feel like that would be good, or try to squeeze for a Hobart or lincoln?

I have one. Nice machine for the money, it'll throw down for what it is. It'll weld 1/4", but it doesn't put out as much heat as a 220 and I wouldn't weld 1/4" plate and expect it to be structurally sound.

Alright, the only place I can think that I would be welding 1/4" would be the mounting plates for a front bumper, but those would be one piece from d-ring hole to the last hole on the front of the frame (all 7 holes plus maybe tie ins across the front crossmember and underneath using the sway bar holes), and would be through welded in the bumper with multiple passes. Would you feel it would be safe enough to weld 3/16" plate for a front bumper with multiple passes and a lot of bracing?

A 140 Hobart will do 3/16" in a single pass if you can weld.
