Keep the stick, or sell it to get a MIG unit...I personally like having tools, haha...but I know pockets are kinda shallow.

Check out Eastwood, Lincoln, and Hobart units, make sure they're 220 or dual voltage, it will do most everything you want...I have a Miller 211, but they're a bit pricier. That said, I do this for a living, and Miller is the gold standard. IMO

Get the best you can afford.
Oh I know, I grew up stick welding with tiny rod on 40 amps before wire feeds. But... It was no comparison to a wire feed or MIG on sheet. We would have to break out a brazing tip for stuff that can now be welded with these newer machines using arc.

I posted before that I do "some" welding at work, this time of year only about 1-2 hours of welding a week. It will be much, much more in the summer. I used to weld a lot but over the last ten years really not at all. So I got rusty. But today I finally brought myself up to my standards, where I did an hour's worth of welding and was happy with every weld. It feels good. And if you are paying attention, like was said before a few posts up, you can learn something new every day you weld. I am actually surprised at how many simple techniques I "forgot about" over the last ten years of not welding. Side note I also got to braze some copper tubing today, something I haven't done in 20 years. That was fun too.

So, I've been using my new hood for about a week now...

I absolutely LOVE it.

You can see everything so clearly, the puddle, the surrounding work piece, even the background, like people walking by and what not. Plus, the headgear is amazingly comfortable, I forget I have it on when the hood is up sometimes, when fully open, you can't see the hood at all... went to lunch the other day still wearing it, and didn't realize it until someone said something, haha.

Money well spent. I used to question higher end hoods, didn't know if they were worth the money, so I've always just gotten mid-range hoods. Well, as the Monkees once said...

I'M A BELIEVER, LOL

Optics make all the difference.

That's awesome. The mask I use is OK, but I do run into times where it is hard to see the edge of the two metals.

Thank you for sharing these videos with us, I don't know if I will be able pony-up for a hood like this. But if I do I might as well get one worthy of the money. Can you do a follow up on your thoughts in a few months of use? Thanks!

If I ever get in the environment where I'm doing a lot of welding again I'll give one of these a shot. After using head jerkers for so many years just having any auto is a luxury in it's self. lol

sounds like a nice hood. i just may have to look into one and replace my cheap free lincoln hood i got as a bonus when i bought my little welder.

While I'm only a week in, I've used it daily. Absolutely fabulous.

Don't hesitate to get a higher priced hood. You get what you pay for.

I realize, not everyone NEEDS a high end hood. I do it on a daily. I need one that performs.

That said, I have used low end and mid range hoods...this blows those out of the water.

If you're gonna be welding on the daily, don't hesitate.

The occasional welds in the shop/garage? Get a good mid-range.

Only get a HF hood if you're learning or don't know how you feel about it yet. And realize, it's an entry level hood, gonna get ya started, but not gonna carry your ***, haha

That's awesome man. I never paid attention before, but that ChuckE2009 guy on YouTube uses a similar one. I'm pretty sure it's not ESAB, but the shape and everything is similar.

I've definitely learned the shortcomings of the HF hood. It's definitely time to upgrade that... and WAY past time to upgrade the welder lol.... saving saving saving though.
