Default Rearbumper mounts

Looked through many a threads concerning rear bumper mounts for xj but wanted a thread specifically for it. OK here's the dilemma for me looking into design and build a rear bumper but want to see how exactly they are mounted. I am going to utilize the four stock locations as well tying them into the unibody. If anyone has specific pictures for the unibody tie would be great.

I don't have any pictures... As i haven't made mine either yet. But from what I understand is this..

Trace the stock mounts onto a piece of plate.. However thick you think is good. Probably thicker than 1/4"?

Then open up your uni-body holes where the rear mounts are so you can slide a piece of metal into the frame rails. Weld nuts into the top of it where the holes for the hitch are. Weld this piece of metal to your new 4-holed square bumper brackets... That what you have at least 7 bolts holding on each side. From there build out your bumper supports and begin fabbing

That's my interpretation of everything i've read. I'd love to hear better / more ideas tho!

ALso, I hope that made sense lol.

Run a 2x4x.25 into the frame rails. Cut 45s into it from the top at the point where the frame starts. Notch it flat from there forward. Drill holes in the flat where the 5 or 6 holes in the frame already are. 3/8 grade 8 hardware fits perfectly. Then weld 1/4 angle iron to the 2x4 where the stock holes are and drill holes in it for the stock holes.

Did mine like that and they're never going anywhere.

Skittle that does make sense and thanks for the specifics motorcharge. Once I get the rear bumper off and my hitch to see what the job entails it will be much easier to interpret what is being said. I have a picture in my head.

In between the 4 holes in an indent. Simply cut that out with a grinder and it leaves a 2x4 hole into the frame rail. You have to notch whatever goes in there because it needs to go under the fuel filler tube.

Here's a link to EricXJs build and I did mine similar to his.

http://www.ericsxj.com/2012build/updates.htm

All in all it took me about an hour to make both my mounts and the bumpers been strong enough that I've towed a 2010 Honda Accord with it and barely felt it behind me.

The first 2 holes in the frame rail are also spaced well that you can run longer bolts on the first 2 through factory tow hooks under the unibody for an extra 2 recovery points.

Also if you use a 2x5, 2x6, ect for the main part of the bumper you don't want to just butt weld the mounts to the surface, you want to cut holes in the backside and run the mounts inside the 2x? and weld them that way.

These are about the one thing that I wish a company made and sold, for some reason I just can't find the motivation to make them haha. But it is on the winter project list. Keep the pics coming!

Do the "nut strips/unibody tie ins" go inside the frame or under it?

Inside the frame. That's why you cut out the frame ends. The whole point in have the strips like that is they have to run them underneath the upper shackle bolts and fuel filler tube.

That bumper design is pretty close to what I would like to do. I might have mine come out a bit more. As far as the tie ins go does it matter either way to have them on the inside or outside?
