Hey everone, I decided to build rear quarter pannel armor with rub rails. I finished the panels and need to start making the rub rails. Some questions i have are (1) how far out from the body should i go with the rails? Initial thought is perhaps an inch beyond the distance the door handle sticks out. Q (2) - what angle should the rail end depart from the body? It needs to be angled enough to not catch anything but also permit a long enough strait run. Its a pretty short run to begin with.
I will post up my process when I am done so it will help other members who may decide to make a set. Like all projects, it would have been simpler and much, much quicker to buy a set but I wanted to try making it myself. Thanks!

Thanks fellas! It was a tremendous amout of work. Showed it to a few of my club members and they are considering making a set for themselves. I will be testing it on the Rubicon trail this week. I am really looking forward to that trip!
For the rub rail dom tube would look better and I would have contoured the bottom better to fit the moulding better. Finally it should have been slightly angled on the front to match the door angle.

Do You just comment to hear yourself talk.....? I dont recall the title saying look I made armor just like everyone else's in the whole world.
jon-d,
Looks great man, always glad to see people tackle a project on their own, and make it there own.
Tackled the Rubicon last week it was a great trip. We had 6 jeeps in our group and camped at buck lake. Every wheeling trip i have done up to that point seemed easy in comparison. The ZJ was the least capable of the group but I had no real difficulties.
I am disappointed to say i never used my new armor. In fact i went out of my way to hit a tree with one on the way out just to make myself feel better about the effort I put into them. My front, however could have used some guards. Tire slipped off a rock and bashed the fender into a rock wall. Then, on the way out i hit two trees completing the job. So, any sugestions on what my next project should look like? I was thinking of removing the plastic bumper and welding up some round tube between the frame and winch plate to protect the corners.
