I did this project about a year ago in preparation for my adventure on the Shadow of The Rockies trail.
I have always preferred sleeping platforms over tents or RTT’s but this was my first for an XJ.
Weight was a major concern so I used cedar fence planks for the outside and 1x6’s for the supports.
This section is only 4’8 so I had to make a modular extension on the front. Reclining the seats all the way up, and pushing them all the way forward, I’m able to add a 12” extension to make it 5’8”. With the rear hatch popped, but not open, this is perfect for me and the wife.
The platform is hinged in the middle so the half's can be raised up for access to under storage.
To top it off I added 1” of foam yoga mat and 4” memory foam mattress. Sleeps good and have had no issues with it.
What I did to give me more length for my head was to grab front seats from a 2 door cherokee. 2 door seat fold forward, 4 door seats do not. this gave me the needed extra length. I searched pick and pull on the Row 52 website, looked for my year model and interior color and score some nice seats, perfect match. of course you can remove your seat covers and place them on the replacement seats. so look for 2 door front seats.
