As for getting cheap sheet metal, and you aren't planning to weld it in, get friendly with an H.V.A.C. guy.
They always seem to have lots of scrap pieces laying around their shop.
Even if you are doing the whole floor, they can get a good deal on a 4'X8' sheet of 16ga. galvanized.
Just don't try to weld on that stuff without serious ventilation.
The fumes contain a few heavy metals that can harm your lungs.
Cadmium being the worst one IIRC. Plus it makes you feel like crap.
