Not sure if this thread is still active. It came up in a search for E.Conduit Roof Rack.

What are JCF mounts?

On seeing this thread I knew I wanted to do one of these. But I didn't see much on the actual mounting to the Jeep roof.
The XJ's have a tiny little lip that does not seem like it would be much help if you had sheets of 4X8 material up there scootin down the road on a windy day.

Are there ways to securely mount a rack w/o drilling holes in the roof? That doesn't seem like a good idea but I really don't know much about this sort of thing. Thanks.

I'd sure like to do one of theses. Got access to tubing bender and lessons if need be. But the stumbling point is mounting. I have the Cheep Cherokee 87. I have a sort of ,hang nail from front to back on both sides, and it doesn't look like a good candidate for rack w/ a few 4X8 sheets of half or 3/4 plywood on a windy day.

What are my options if I'm right about the drip gutter or what ever it is?

Pricey, but an option. If you have the means, you could make something similar without much effort.

 

You are probably right about DIY. I'd need to hold one to tell if I could make something I'd trust. Can't tell much from the pic. on the webpage.

Besides there is this, if there are four in a set, [I forget ] 15 bux and change is not out of line for the time and material to make one.

The kit comes with 6. If you look at all the pics and read the description, you will have most of the basic dimensions, they give material thicknesses, basic overall dimensions, size of hardware used, and a centerline dimension of the mount holes. Just put the pieces of the puzzle together, and improvise the rest.

Looks like they use 3/16" and 1/8" thick for the mount and securing plate. They are roughly 5.5" from base to top. Centerline for the rack mounting is at 3 3/4".

You'd need roughly 3 feet of 2-2.5" flat stock in 3/16" thickness for the main plate. The hardware mount plate would be 1/8" thick, I would use square stock, cut to size, and trimmed along one side, to give it a slight wrap on the edges, to hug the rain gutter. Drill 5/16" holes for the mounting hardware. For the rack mount holes, drill 2 holes for each oblong hole, one right next to the other, and file/grind to make it smooth in the center. Any dimensions in question would have to be done with your ride, rack, and mounts in front of you.

If you break it down, for the price of a single mount from JCR, you could make all 6...minus the h/w and paint.

Only tools needed would be measuring and marking devices, a cop saw, cutoff wheel, and drill press...

 

I forgot to mention when I was on their page none for the access menues were working. I couldn't do anything but look at that page. Might have been something awry here. I'd just changed browsers and was having some trouble getting things going.
