a buddy of mine has i think a 97 or 98 tj sahara with 4.5 in of lift and we were wheelin a couple months ago and he broke his tranny. i know yall on this side of the forum would know alot more about wranglers than i would i was just wondering where he could look to get a new tranny for real cheap and not break his bank that he doesnt have.
Chances are he has a 3 speed auto. Those are really tough transmissions that take a beating, as long as you don't ingest water like i did.
I swamped my tj's 32RH and it slipped for two years until it finally gave out. I swapped in another 32RH from www.daveysjeeps.com and all was good.
How did the transmission break?

well i said id tell you what happend and here it goes. he took tit to the shop this weekend and they pulled the tranny and they said that it was trashed. so he can let them fix it for like 2600 or somthin like that or get a new or used one.
The wranglers and cherokees have different transmissions (auto). The wranglers don't have overdrive and cherokees do. Someone mentioned to you that you could swap a cherokee transmission into a wrangler. This may be very possible because the AW4 (cherokee auto transmission) has a seperate wiring harness and computer from the engine. The only difference would be the transmission length (this would affect your driveshaft lengths and transfer case mount to crossmember bolting location). It is much easier to find a cherokee auto than it is to find a wrangler auto transmission. Depending how much work is involved in bolting it in place, it would be a great idea to make the swap just to have overdrive. They are strong transmissions as well. Hope that helps.
