Best 4x4 ever
i apoligize for saying that b2's and rangers have a sfa. they do have the dana 28 and 35 ttb (twin traction beam). but these vehicles are still very capable offroad. i have seen rangers pushing 35's to 37's with these axle. the front axle much like the xj's do not undermine their offroad capability. what he was asking was what we think the best stock 4x4 is and we all know the xj is up their. but you cant just overlook every thing else.

So, now the big Q? Who's organizing this stock 4x4 challenge?

Well Whowey is right. I vote the XJ is the best all around 4X4 but the early IH Scouts were pretty awesome. Their V8s were powerful enough and solid axles made for a rugged vehicle that was at home on the trail or at the grocery store.
let me just go ahead and open a can of worms here
85 yota
I know you'all are gonna say there is no power with that little 22re. Yeah they aren't gonna pull heavy loads up a grade on the highway, but in low gear will turn them tires no matter what. I have seen these trucks take more of a beating than I thought was possible. FYI I have had the following 4x4's:
s10blazer, 78bronco, 91xj, 84yota, 85yota, 94dakota, 01tj, 86f150, 86xj
So I am not playing favorites, I like my xj's and am building up my 86 now, but would take the yota hands down. Unless I was pulling weight, then I would go with a burb or pwagon

The best I've had was a 2000 slt offroad pak dodge ram. Std cab and 6' box. 360, auto 4.10gears and lockers frt and rear. At the time it towed my race car, hauled all my camping gear, wheeled all day no problems, and got me around as a DD/ work truck. Should have kept it. This is mearly my opinion from what I have onwed.
I would have to say 1985 Toyota 4runner with the efi. Great drivetrain. Awesome aftermarket support and basically bulletproof. Lots of cargo room, removeable hardtop, its probably the best of all worlds. Cons, expensive to buy and build. However you dont have to build them much if you dont want to. It seems with jeeps, scouts, and broncos you have to upgrade everything from the axles up. I know alot of the scouts and jeeps came with dana 44s already, but like my cj5, it needs upgrades everywhere. The scout 80s where the same way. Also with the yota you can at least afford to wheel it when it comes to fuel economy
I would have to say that the XJ is definately the best. The all around best XJ would be a 4 door, 4.0, 5speed, 4x4. It's pretty hard to match that vehicle especially for that price range, I think it would be impossible (you can get a lot of older well built vehicles but they would be carbureted, gas hogs that won't be as reliable) to beat... XJ hands down!

Based on the criteria in the OP, the world-wide, hands-down winner would have to be the Range Rover/Land Rover line. Admittedly it was copied from the Jeep, but it was improved adding the aluminum rover V8, PTO's front and rear, and could be kept running with the simplest of tools. It would run on the lowest grades of fuels. I, just like most of you, prefer Jeep though.
