If you are handy and dont care if the jeep is a salvage title, look for those too. I just got a 2000 Cherokee, 60,000 miles, dent on the fender and door, fixed those up and its ready to go. It was salvage because it was stolen, but anyhting with the theft was fixed by the PO before he sold it, all i had to do was the body work.

I'm actually VERY serious about it. Although, I'm not looking for an equal trade, I would want a Cherokee and then a small sum of money to balance out the actual values of the car. But I am serious about getting rid of the car.

I'm selling my 73 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...m=270406890305

And I'm going to sell my wife's 2004 Volkswagen Beetle Convertible (will go on eBay tonight).

Then I'm going to sell my 2006 Pontiac Solstice.

I'm in the process of buying a FWD Jeep Patriot Limited. It's loaded with everything, but only 2WD. And then I'm looking to get some kind of crap-box vehicle, like a Focus or something to drive around in, and then get a low mileage Cherokee.

We'll then have my 2002 Crown Victoria LX (w/ 43k miles), my 73 VW Bus, my 87 Fiero (my first car), her Jeep Patriot, and my **** box with a Cherokee.

The only problem with Salvage is that it's next to impossible to register a salvage vehicle in Florida. As i understand it, it needs to be completely inspected and then given a NEW "vin" so to speak by the local police department, and then in many cases, I'd have a hard time getting insurance for it down here...

That sucks.. I know Pennsylvania won't except New York salvage titles, but honestly if you saw the pics you would wonder why it salvaged.. I was hoping for a straight up trade..lol.. but i knew that wasnt going to happen. The only thing i could say is to start looking now for cherokees, in the 1.5 to 2 months i was looking for mine i passed on way too many good deals, but i am still satisfied with my purchase..lol.. Good luck with all the sales and in finding the cherokee

IMO, the best 4x4 ever is the Jeep Rubicon. I can't count how many 4x4 magazines and websites said the same thing. It comes out of the factory ready to hit the trails and climb rocks. The four door rubicon JK is even better. More space, better wheelbase, lockers, 4:1 low range. I see some of you guys said the xj, which is a great 4x4 but not the greatest. They came with unrealiable dana 35's, are prone to body twisting (extreme 4x4), and don't have any factory lockers available. You can't take a stock xj on gnarly hill climbs, big boulders, etc cuz it just doesn't work until you put money into it and make it capable.

So that's my opinion: The Rubicon.

yup those are bad. but to bad it will be like 30k plus to get one that is just ready to go wheeling. my xj with all my mods and tires and what not is still less then about 10k

Yeah but the JK is brand new. If I bought my XJ brand new today it would cost $23,385. That's the actual retail price back in 2001. It would probably be a little more today so both rigs are expensive, the jk being more cuz it has all the off road goodies available right out of the factory. So if you compare both brand new right off the showroom floor, JK wins hands down.

I would have to go with the CJ-5/7 and the BRONCO 2. They are my favorite for best 4x4 but I have to say the ****** is up there as well.

My vote is a tie between the Early Bronco or the Scout II

Man I see alot of bronco and some full size 4x4 votes here. I can't see how the bronco can be that great. I drove a couple a few years ago and my buddy owned a lifted bronco but they all performed "ok". They are so big and heavy and hard to control when it gets bouncy, not to mention they leak like a bitc$ and always seem to have issues. I guess maybe the ones i experienced weren't in top shape. I dunno but i can't see a full size heavy 4x4 being the best. Just my opinon. I welcome the FLAMERS!!!!

In my case ... I didn't say the fullsize Bronco.

I said the early ones (i.e shoebox).

For an out of the box vehicle ... both the EB & Scout had a lot of good parts and a great size to match. Mods can make any vehicle "ultimate" ... so it really becomes a wash.

Funny how things turn out... last night, I picked up a 2008 Jeep Patriot for my wife. We traded in her 2004 VW Beetle, got $10k for the Beetle, and bought the Patriot (out the door) for $13,600. So we paid in total $3,600. They paid for tags, title, registration, blah blah...

It's pretty cool. It's only a 2WD, but has the 2.4 VVT with a 5-Speed manual. It's a limited so it basically has every option including sunroof, satellite, flashlight, outlet, blah blah...

It's pretty nice.

Now all I need to do is finish getting rid of the Oldsmobile Cutlass (on an eBay auction) and then sell my 2006 Pontiac Solstice.

I'll probably try to trade my Solstice in on a Cherokee (1999-2001) and get some cash back to paint the house, etc...

Overall, I'm really happy with the Patriot for my wife. It's only FWD of course, but it's way cooler than most of the other "mommy" rides out there.
