Undo the clamps for the intake hose like this. I undid at the airbox. It makes it easier. Both ends of this piece were like glued on it seemed. Probably it has never been removed and pulled off prior to today. Once that piece is out of the way, undo the four bolts holding down your throttle body. Disconecting the three sensors; the Throttle Position Sensor, IAC, and the MAP sensors from the throttle body. Two of them you push the tab down with your thumb like shown here, and just pull back. The other one you have to lift up on it instead, and then just pull back. Lift the throttle body straight up. I am re-using this here 22 year old throttle body gasket. If you want to re-use it too, be very careful when you remove it. Mine was stuck down on the engine side. The inside of mine. The parts removed. Stuff a rag or something in here. The TPS sensor has a rubber connection to be wary of when removing it from the TB. The TPS removed. The IAC removed. Remove the little rubber gasket from the IAC before you start cleaning it. Mine is absolutely horrible, with all of that crusty carbon depositing all over the inside of it. Clean it with a tooth brush and TB cleaner. Make sure to get the little space around the circumference close to and at the base of the IAC valve. It gets real nasty inside of there! The inside of my throttle body all nasty! Cleans up well with TB cleaner spray and two toothbrushes. One tooth brush for scrubbing the nasty parts, and another toothbrush for finely cleaning it again once you have most all of the real nasty gunk cleaned up. Got to put it back together soon, after you have everything nicely clean and new looking again.. The IAC looks better all cleaned up now. I recommend cleaning up your IAC housing too. Four special 'star' type of bolts, that require the correct tool bit in order to be removed to be able to undo it. See it above how I clean it.. Below is a picture coming up showing better why and where to focus cleaning inside of here at the IAC housing.
Put the IAC stepper motor and its housing back together again.
So, here is a shot of the inside of the IAC valve housing. Clean it all, especially right there where the tip of the IAC valve pluner goes into shown in the above picture. You can see where I accidentally ripped off the upper right corner from off the gasket. I re-used this gasket, by placing the little ripped off portion of the gasket back together with the smallest amount of contact cement dabbed at the point where it broke away. Make sure to put the gasket back on the right way for the IAC valve housing assembly, where it pairs up to the throttle body. It only goes on one way. Everything is all back together. Place the TB gasket down, line up the bolt holes to the TB, and tighten the four bolts back down, in a criss-cross pattern. I cleaned the lip at both sides of this hose prior to putting it back on and together again. Woops... This is for removal of the intake hose... This is how to tighten these type of clamps back on.. You do not need to overdo tightening these. Also, make sure both ends at the airbox, and at the TB, that they are fully seated back on correctly, before you tighten these clamps back down again. Re-connect the three sensors again. Make sure to pay attention here where the three cables attach. Do not break the plastic ones. The furthest one away just pulls back off away towards the firewall. It just pushes back on when you put it back together again. The middle one and the closest one both disconnect the same way.. Push down on the throttle here to remove, and to replace these three, how it is shown in the picture above. That is a cleaning and maintenance procedure for your 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4.0L ZJ, the throttle body and IAC.. How I went about doing it. My ZJ is new, so I cleaned it up to make it better.
