Default ZJ Rear Ends

I'm looking at maybe buying a '95 V8 for $800. Runs but he says the rear end locked up a few months ago. Haven't gone to check if it's a 35 or 44a. I searched and it's telling me neither rear end is very good. I couldn't find much on swapping in an 8.8. Are these worthwhile offroaders? Or should I just keep looking for another XJ?

ZJs do very well off road. They will go anyplace a stock XJ will go, maybe even more places than a stock XJ.

Since the ZJ D35 is probably as weak as the XJs, I'm hoping the D44a would be good enough for 33s and a locker

Not the D44a, not a good choice for big tires and a locker because the center section is made of aluminum.

not too wise to lock the 35, tires are alright as long as you dont beat on it too hard. if you know youre going to be wheeling the **** out of it. look into a 44 or 8.8, or even better 1-tons =]

I don't believe the 44a's started until '96. I've had several and never seen a 44a in anything earlier. According to Dana it was only used in the '96 and later Grands.

don't mean to intrude on your post (well actually I do, sorry) just wondering if you guys could see what rear end this is. 94ZJ V8. I thought it was a dana 35 but some guy said it wasn't because of the orange gasket on it??

If my zoom and eyes are correct I see 35c on the bottom left of the pumpkin. Which makes it a Dana 35.

It says 252c on the bottom left, not 35c. Sorry it didn't attach the zoomed pic.

I have one at my house and it has numbers (35C) on the top right side of the cover from the angle that you would be looking at in the pic.

Seems like a good shot of some different axles.

there should be a tag on the top of the tube on the axle. it should have some info about the axle or a number.
